Media companies can now be more accountable and transparent, thanks to new guidance

Editorial independence, a journalist’s freedom of expression, and the responsibility a video game creator takes for influencing the mind of a player can now be reported by media companies, thanks to new guidance being launched today (Friday 4 May 2012) at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Press Freedom Day International conference. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)’s Sustainability Reporting Guidelines for media companies will help increase transparency and accountability in the media.

How Nestlé got a GRI A+ for its Creating Shared Value report

(from GreenBiz;April 17) This month, Nestle has achieved a significant step toward greater transparency: We've met the A+ requirements from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for our annual report on Creating Shared Value.

We know that other food companies have met A+ requirements for reports in certain regions, but we are the first to reach this level for a global report. It was a huge challenge, but we believe it has been worth the effort.

As you may know, the GRI has three reporting levels -- A, B and C -- aimed at encouraging companies and organizations to enhance the quality and transparency of their reporting over time. A "plus" means that reports that have been verified by an independent third party.

Why it's time to link compensation with sustainability.

Incentive-based pay isn’t new; it’s been around for centuries. Ship captains transporting prisoners from England to Australia were once rewarded, not on passenger counts, but on how many survived the journey. Nowadays with major companies, it’s usually linked to financial performance. But unless companies begin to connect compensation to sustainable environmental and social performance, they will continue to sacrifice long-term value creation and competitiveness for short-term, unsustainable gains.

SAM kicks off annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment – leading companies will make it into the Dow Jones Sustainability Index

SAM, the investment boutique focused exclusively on Sustainability Investing, invites the 2,500 largest companies in terms of free float market capitalization from all sectors to participate in its annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). The CSA is the research backbone for the construction of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). Since 2002, Ceres and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) have given out annual awards recognizing excellence in sustainability reporting in North America. The awards are presented each year at the Ceres Conference.

New Ceres/Sustainalytics Report Shows Most U.S. Companies Falling Short on Sustainability

BOSTON – In the first major assessment of progress on a unique Ceres Roadmap to corporate sustainability released two years ago, Ceres and global research and analysis firm Sustainalytics today released The Road to 2020: Corporate Progress on the Ceres Roadmap for Sustainability.

 

The findings - based on an assessment of how 600 U.S. companies are responding to environmental and social challenges such as climate change, water scarcity and supply chain conditions – show individual examples of leadership but significant need for overall improvement.

Sustainability data revealed easily with new reporting format -  new format for tagging data in sustainability reports

08 March 2012    â€‹Data on the sustainability performance of companies – including carbon emissions, water use and human rights infringements – can now be easily revealed thanks to a new format for tagging data in sustainability reports, being launched today (Thursday 8 March 2012) by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).Sustainability experts say the new format will help people find information hidden in sustainability reports much more quickly and easily. 

 
According to recent research, 95 percent of the world’s 250 biggest companies now report their sustainability performance. GRI produces a comprehensive sustainability reporting framework that is widely used around the world. The Framework, which includes the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, features indicators that organizations can use to measure and report their sustainability performance. read more...
